A wallpaper mural of a lost island is animated by the movements of a protective plastic sheet, which is set in motion by the “breeze” of two oscillating fans. The panoramic wall mural − the kind of wall decoration which became highly popular in the pre-digital era of the 1970’s − responds to our desire to escape from everyday reality and to plunge into a dream world. This urge of immersion into a perfect world has been a driving force behind the developments and phantasms of virtual realities and global connectedness throughout the digital age. While this collective dream is far from being abandoned, our so-called post-digital age seems to be characterised by a general disillusionment about the capacity of technological progress to make the world a better place and to provide convincing solutions for the problems we are facing. “Lost Island Dreams” is an attempt to negotiate our quasi-primordial need and pleasure to temporarily suspend our analytic faculties and to escape into a perfect world with the post-digital awareness that such a world can only ever be an illusion.
